Complete or partial change of water has proved beneficial to the lives of fish. The water can be easily drained by the means of a siphon. Rather than relying on a mechanical siphon (vacuum pump) like the one in Figure 2.4, you can easily make one.

This can be made with a rubber hose of about 1.5 metres long and the diameter should not be more than 25 millimetre because the wider the hose, the more difficult it is to draw water out by sucking. To utilise the hose, hold one end of it inside the water and quickly suck (if you have to) from the other end held lower than the aquarium water level (Figure 2.5).
